The Power and Pitfalls of Skepticism

Healthy skepticism is a good thing. You can put your cynical side to good use by looking at what is missing or wrong with an idea, or what could go wrong with a project and then using that knowledge to prevent potential problems. In other words, you can use initial pessimism to make changes that lead to optimism and ensure a better end result.

But some people seem to think that any skepticism is healthy skepticism and that cynicism is a sign of intelligence! They immediately look for what they don’t agree with and jump on anything that looks even remotely dangerous or unfounded and then proceed to declare themselves the resident expert on why this is such a bad idea...eagerly telling anyone who will listen why "this is wrong", and "that is bad" etc. ad nauseam.

The funny thing is that folks who use initial skepticism more prudently and then shift to optimism on the exact same issue happily go on to prosper and succeed with it! So, who would you say is really the “smartest” in the end?

The bottom line is that it’s a good idea to apply some skepticism toward skepticism! Skeptics say they have a hard time trusting anything (or anyone), but they often trust their own skeptical judgments unconditionally! Renowned psychological researcher Martin Seligman did extensive studies tracking the results of optimism and pessimism. His research proved that optimists succeed better than pessimists in every field (except law). So if your bank account isn’t as full as you would like it to be, maybe you need to doubt less and move more!
