Nn Supa EPA is Free of Dioxins

Nn Supa EPA
SAFE & PURE Fish Oil

There is a growing concern over the threat of harmful dioxin levels in certain fish oil health supplements (including Omega-3 fish oil, cod liver oil, etc).

Nn Supa EPA has been tested and verified by an independent lab, Wellington Laboratories in Canada, to be free of these cancer-causing contaminants.

Nn Supa EPA is;

  • Made using oil extracted from selected deep-sea fishes from low pollutant areas
  • Molecularly distilled to remove all possible contaminants such as heavy metals and dioxins, etc

What Are Dioxins & Where Are They Found?
Dioxins are one of the MOST TOXIC chemical groups known to science. A draft report released for public comment in September 1994 by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) clearly describes Dioxins as a serious public health threat. The health impact of dioxins may rival the impact that DDT had on public health in the 1960's.

Do Dioxins Cause Cancer?
Yes. The EPA Report confirmed that Dioxins are a CANCER HAZARD to people. In February 1997, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) - part of the World Health Organization - announced that the most potent dioxin is a Class 1 Carcinogen, meaning a "known human carcinogen". A July 2002 study confirmed that dioxins are related to increased incidence of breast cancer.

What Other Health Problems Are Linked To Dioxin Exposure?
In addition to cancer, exposure to dioxins can also cause SEVERE reproductive and developmental problems. Dioxins are known for their ability to damage the immune system and interfere with hormonal systems. Dioxin exposure has been linked to birth defects, inability to maintain pregnancy, decreased fertility, reduced sperm counts, endometriosis, diabetes, learning disabilities, immune system suppression, lung problems, skin disorders, lowered testosterone levels and other health problems.

Should You Be Concerned About Dioxins?
Yes! Make sure the fish oil products that you are taking are certified to be free of Dioxin.

According to EPA's Dioxin Report, dioxins are lipophilic (fat loving). This means that in dioxin-contaminated fishing areas, dioxins tend to accumulate in the fat of fishes in these areas rather than remain in the water. These toxins bio-accumulate up the food chain so dioxin levels in fish can go up to 100,000 times that of their environment!

Dioxin Threat In The News

1. Excerpt from ‘TODAY newspaper’, Singapore (9th April 2006)

Cod Liver Oil Capsules Pulled off Shelves
By Cheow Xin Yi

SINGAPORE : About 1,000 bottles of a popular brand of cod liver oil capsules were taken off shelves two weeks ago due to a breach in permitted levels of dioxins.

Manufactured by Seven Seas, a unit of German pharmaceutical company Merck, the affected batches slightly exceeded the European Union limit for dioxins, which are impurities found in the natural health environment. The product recall affects three batches of its JointCare High Strength Cod Liver Oil and Pulse Triomega Capsules.

The firm stressed that the affected supplements - of which 4,000 bottles have been sold in Singapore - remain safe for human consumption. This is because even though the permissible dioxins have breached EU regulations, they are still within the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommended tolerable daily intake.

Although this is Seven Seas' first product recall in Singapore, it carried out a similar exercise in Hong Kong early this month.

2. News Excerpt from Europe (13th April 2006)

Boots has become the second UK company to withdraw fish oil supplements from the market due to excessive dioxin levels in less than a month, but companies and the authorities reassure consumers that the products pose no threat to their health.

The UK retailer this week withdrew two batches of its own-brand Super Strength Fish Oil Capsules, because they were found to contain dioxin levels in excess of EU limits. This withdrawal and the accompanying 'for information' food alert from the Food Standards Agency (FSA) comes just four weeks after similar action from Seven Seas.

Dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) are chemicals that occur almost everywhere in our environment. Bi-products of combustion, they can be created either naturally through events such as forest fires or through man-made processes.

Their ubiquity means they are found in all foods, but highest levels are found in edible fish and other products with a high animal fat content. Dioxins can build up in the human body if too-high levels are consumed. High levels have been linked to a number of health problems, such as cancer, immune and nervous system disorders, liver damage and sterility.

The tolerable daily intake of dioxins - that is, the amount that may be consumed every day over a lifetime without causing harm - is 2pg (picograms) per kilogram of bodyweight. The EU limits for dioxins in fish oil intended for human consumption were set in July 2002 at 2pg/g.
